✧ The severity of delaying the sunset prayer

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ، وَمُؤَمَّلُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ الْيَشْكُرِيُّ قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، ( ح ) وَحَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْجَزَرِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ مَرْثَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْيَزَنِيِّ قَالَ:

قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا أَبُو أَيُّوبَ غَازِيًا، [ وَ] عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى مِصْرَ فَأَخَّرَ الْمَغْرِبَ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ، فَقَالَ: مَا هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةُ يَا عُقْبَةُ ؟ فَقَالَ: شُغِلْنَا، فَقَالَ: أَمَا وَاللهِ، مَا بِي إِلَّا أَنْ يَظُنَّ النَّاسُ أَنَّكَ رَأَيْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُ هَكَذَا، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَا تَزَالُ أُمَّتِي بِخَيْرٍ - أَوْ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ - مَا لَمْ يُؤَخِّرُوا الْمَغْرِبَ حَتَّى تَشْتَبِكَ النُّجُومُ ". هَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الدَّوْرَقِيِّ، وَقَالَ الْمُؤَمَّلُ وَالْفَضْلُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ: أَمَا سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: " لَا تَزَالُ أُمَّتِي..

✧ Abu Ayyub came to us as a warrior, and Uqbah b. Amir was at that time over Egypt. He delayed the sunset prayer, so Abu Ayyub stood up to him and said: What is this prayer, O Uqbah? He said: We were kept busy. He said: By God, I only fear that people will think you saw the Messenger of God ﷺ do this. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: My community will remain in good—or upon the natural disposition—as long as they do not delay the sunset prayer until the stars appear intertwined.
