✧ evidence that the obligation of prayer upon the prophets before Muhammad was five prayers

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ الضَّبِّيُّ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مُغِيرَةُ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ - وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَيَّاشِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ الزُّرَقِيُّ ( ح ) وَحَدَّثَنَا بُنْدَارٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ. ( ح ) وَحَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَيَّاشِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَ وَكِيعٌ: عَنِ الزُّرَقِيِّ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ عَبَّادِ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ:

أَمَّنِي جِبْرِيلُ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ مَرَّتَيْنِ، فَصَلَّى بِيَ الظُّهْرَ حِينَ مَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَدْرَ الشِّرَاكِ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْعَصْرَ حِينَ كَانَ ظِلُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِثْلَهُ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْمَغْرِبَ حِينَ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْعِشَاءَ حِينَ غَابَ الشَّفَقُ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْفَجْرَ حِينَ حَرُمَ الطَّعَامُ وَالشَّرَابُ عَلَى الصَّائِمِ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْغَدَ الظُّهْرَ حِينَ كَانَ ظِلُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِثْلَهُ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْعَصْرَ حِينَ كَانَ ظِلُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِثْلَيْهِ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْمَغْرِبَ حِينَ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْعِشَاءَ حِينَ مَضَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ، وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْغَدَاةَ بَعْدَمَا أَسْفَرَ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، الْوَقْتُ فِيمَا بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ الْوَقْتَيْنِ، هَذَا وَقْتُكَ وَوَقْتُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ قَبْلَكَ

✧ Jibril led me in prayer at the House twice. He prayed Zuhr with me when the sun had declined the amount of a sandal strap, and he prayed Asr with me when the shadow of every object was equal to its length, and he prayed Maghrib with me when the fasting person breaks his fast, and he prayed Isha with me when the twilight had disappeared, and he prayed Fajr with me when food and drink become forbidden for the fasting person. The next day, he prayed Zuhr with me when the shadow of every object was equal to its length, and he prayed Asr with me when the shadow of every object was twice its length, and he prayed Maghrib with me when the fasting person breaks his fast, and he prayed Isha with me when a third of the night had passed, and he prayed the morning prayer with me after it had become bright. Then he turned to me and said: O Muhammad, the time is between these two times. This is your time and the time of the prophets before you.
