✧ While I was at the House, between the sleeping and the waking, I heard a speaker saying: Take the middle of the three. I was brought a basin of gold in it was water from Zamzam. He said: "My chest was split open to such and such." Qatādah said: I said: What does he mean by that? He said: To the bottom of his belly. "My heart was extracted, washed with Zamzam water, then returned to its place, then filled with faith and wisdom. Then I was brought a white beast called al-Burāq, above a donkey and below a mule, whose stride reaches as far as its eye can see. I was mounted on it. Then we set off until we came to the lowest heaven. Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibrīl. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muḥammad. [It was said]: And has he been sent to? He said: Yes. So it was opened for us. He said: Welcome to him, and what an excellent coming has come. I came to Ādam and said: O Jibrīl, who is this? He said: This is your father Ādam. I greeted him and he said: Welcome to the righteous son and the righteous prophet." He said: "Then we set off until we reached the second heaven. Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibrīl. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muḥammad. It was said: And has he been sent to? He said: Yes. So it was opened for us. He said: Welcome to him, and what an excellent coming has come. I came to Yaḥyā and ʿĪsā and said: O Jibrīl, who are these two? He said: Yaḥyā and ʿĪsā. Saʿīd said: I believe he said in his ḥadīth: the two maternal cousins. I greeted them and they said: Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet." He said: "Then we set off until we reached the third heaven. Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibrīl. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muḥammad. He said: And has he been sent to? He said: Yes. He said: So it was opened for us, and he said: Welcome to him, and what an excellent coming has come. He said: I came to Yūsuf and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother. Then they set off to the fourth heaven, and it was something like Jibrīl's speech and their speech. I came to Idrīs and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet. Then we reached the fifth heaven, and I came to Hārūn and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet. Then we set off to the sixth heaven, and I came to Mūsā – may God bless [him and] all of them – and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet. When I passed him, he wept. He said: Then I returned to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. The Prophet of God ﷺ related that its fruit is like the jars of Hajar, and its leaves like the ears of elephants. The Prophet of God ﷺ related that he saw four rivers emerging from its root: two apparent rivers and two hidden rivers. I said: O Jibrīl, what are these rivers? He said: As for the two hidden rivers, they are two rivers in Paradise. As for the two apparent ones, they are the Nile and the Euphrates. Then the Much-Frequented House was raised for us. I said: O Jibrīl, what is this? He said: This is the Much-Frequented House, into which seventy thousand angels enter every day; when they leave it, they never return to it, as the last of them. He said: Then I was brought two vessels, one of them wine and the other milk. They were presented to me, and I chose the milk. It was said: You have chosen rightly; may God keep your community upon the natural disposition. Then fifty prayers every day were made obligatory upon me. I returned with them until I came to Mūsā, and he said: What have you been commanded? I said: Fifty prayers every day. He said: Your community cannot bear that. I have tested the Children of Israel before you, and I have struggled with the Children of Israel the hardest struggle. So go back to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for your community. I went back, and He reduced five from me. I kept going back and forth between my Lord and Mūsā, He reducing from me and he saying to me the like of his statement, until I returned with five prayers every day. I came to Mūsā, and he said: What have you been commanded? I said: Five prayers every day. He said: Your community cannot bear that. I have tested the people before you, and I have struggled with the Children of Israel the hardest struggle. So go back to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for your community. He said: I have gone back to my Lord until I felt ashamed, but I accept and submit. Then it was called out: I have decreed – or I have finalized – My obligation and have lightened it for My servants, and I have made every good deed ten times its like."

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith that Yūnus narrated from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from Abū Dharr, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning the Ascension (al-miʿrāj), and that Qatādah narrated from Anas, from Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, from the Prophet ﷺ. It was said to my father: which of the two is closer? He said: I do not set anyone of the people of his era level with al-Zuhrī. Then he said: I hope that both are sound. Another time he said: the hadith of al-Zuhrī is more sound. I said to my father: they differed regarding al-Zuhrī. He said: Yes, some of them say, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from Ubayy b. Kaʿb, but al-Zuhrī from Anas from Abū Dharr is more sound.

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it from Anas; ʿUqayl and Yūnus related it from him. There is disagreement about Yūnus: Abū Ḍamrah said, from Yūnus, from Abū, and I think that "Dharr" dropped out for him, so he made it from Ubayy b. Kaʿb and was mistaken in it. Qatādah also narrated this hadith from Anas b. Mālik, from Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, and he brought it in full. Shuʿbah narrated part of it from Qatādah, from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ, the story of the two rivers; Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān related it from Shuʿbah. It seems that all the accounts are sound, because their narrators are reliable (athbāt).
