Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 306

Translation

✧ We were on a journey with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and we traveled one night until, when it was the pre-dawn before morning, we fell into that sleep—and no sleep is sweeter to a traveler than it—and nothing woke us except the heat of the sun. He mentioned part of the hadith—and he said: Then he called for prayer and prayed with the people. Then he turned from his prayer, and there was a man who had set himself apart and had not prayed with the group. He said to him: “What prevented you, O so-and-so, from praying with the group?” He said: “O Messenger of God, I became junub and there is no water.” He said: “You must use the earth, for it suffices you.” Then he traveled on, and the people complained to him of thirst. He called so-and-so—Abu Raja’ named him but ‘Awf forgot—and he called ‘Ali b. Abi Talib, and said to them: “Go and seek water for us.” They departed and met a woman between two water-skins on a camel—he mentioned the hadith. And he said: Then an announcement was made among the people: “Give water to drink and take water for yourselves.” So whoever wished gave water to drink and whoever wished took water. He said: The last of that was that he gave the one who had been afflicted with janabah a vessel of water and said: “Go and pour it over yourself.”
