✧ I recited to 'A'ishah: 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' (Quran 2:158). I said: I do not think there is any obligation upon one who does not perform Tawaf between them. She said: How bad is what you have said, O son of my sister! It was only those who entered ihram for Manat, the idol at Mushallal, who used to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. When Islam came, they said: O Messenger of Allah, our Tawaf between these two stones is from the affairs of the Jahiliyyah. She said: Then the verse 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' was revealed. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Tawaf, and it became a Sunnah. Someone other than her said: Allah said: 'So whoever does good voluntarily' (Quran 2:158). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did good voluntarily and performed Tawaf. Al-Zuhri said: I narrated this to Abu Bakr b. 'Abd al-Rahman, and he said: This is indeed knowledge. I have heard men of knowledge say: The people who used to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa asked the Prophet ﷺ, saying: O Messenger of Allah, we were commanded to perform Tawaf around the House, but we were not commanded to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah.'
