✧ I became pale one day, and a companion of mine said to me, “Let us go to the camp.” He said: So I went and washed, and applied khalooq. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to wipe our faces, but when he came near me he began to keep his hand away from the khalooq. When he finished, he said to me, “O Ya‘la, what made you apply khalooq? Did you get married?” I said, “No.” So the Messenger of God ﷺ said to me, “Then go and wash it off.” He said: I passed by a well and began to plunge into it, then I began to rub myself with dust until it was gone. Then I came back, and when the Messenger of God ﷺ saw me, he said: “And al-‘Ala’ returned with the goodness of his religion; he repented and the sky poured down.”
