✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me to guard the Zakat of Ramadan. A visitor came to me in the middle of the night and began scooping up food. I seized him and said: I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Let me go, for I am in need. So I let him go. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said after praying the morning prayer: O Abu Hurayrah, what did your prisoner do last night? Or he said: the previous night? I said: O Messenger of Allah, he complained of need, so I let him go, and he claimed that he would not return. He said: Indeed, he has lied to you, and he will return. He said: So I lay in wait for him, knowing that he would return because of the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: He came and began scooping up food. I seized him and said: I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He complained of need, so I let him go. Then morning came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: What did your prisoner do last night? Or the previous night? I said: O Messenger of Allah, he complained of need, so I let him go, and he claimed that he would not return. He said: Indeed, he has lied to you, and he will return. So I lay in wait for him, knowing that he would return because of the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came and began scooping up food. I seized him and said: I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Let me go, and I will teach you words by which Allah will benefit you. He said: They were the most eager of people for good. He said: When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi: 'Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence' (Qur'an 2:255). For there will remain with you a guardian from Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning. So I let him go. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: What did your prisoner do, O Abu Hurayrah? So I informed him, and he said: He spoke the truth to you, though he is a liar. Do you know whom you have been addressing for three nights? That was the devil.
