✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent a man from Banu Makhzum over zakat. He said to me: Accompany me. I said: No, not until I go to the Messenger of God ﷺ and ask him. He said: So he went to him and asked him, and he said: "Zakat is not lawful for us, and the freed slaves of a people are from themselves."

machine translationAl-Ḥakam narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Shuʿbah narrated it from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from his father. ʿAmr b. Marzūq said, from Shuʿbah, the same; and likewise Usāmah said, from Shuʿbah. But al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh said, from al-Ḥakam, that Abū Rāfiʿ asked the Prophet ﷺ for something of the charity (ṣadaqah), and he said: "It is not lawful for the Prophet ﷺ, nor for any of his family, nor for their freed slaves." So it would be mursal (with the Companion omitted from the chain).
