✧ We met Abu Dharr while he was at the middle jamrah, and I asked him about Laylat al-Qadr. He said: No one was more eager to ask the Messenger of Allah about it than I. I said: O Messenger of Allah, was Laylat al-Qadr sent down upon the prophets with revelation to them therein, then it returns? He said: "Rather, it is until the Day of Resurrection." So I said: O Messenger of Allah, which of them is it? He said: "Had I been permitted, I would have told you, but seek it in the two sevenths, and do not ask me about it after that." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the people and began speaking, so I said: O Messenger of Allah, in which of the two sevenths is it? He became angry with me with an anger the like of which he had never been angry with me before or after. Then he said: "Did I not forbid you to ask me about it? Had I been permitted, I would have told you about it — or I would have told you it — but I am not sure that it is in the last seven."

machine translationThus al-Awzāʿī said, from Marthad b. Abī Marthad, and this is an error; rather it is Mālik b. Marthad, from his father. Al-Awzāʿī did not establish the isnād of this hadith correctly, nor did he relate it in the manner of those who have memorized it.
