✧ The chapters on the excuse that permits abandoning attendance at the congregation

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ مَعْدَانَ

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنَّكُمْ تَأْكُلُونَ شَجَرَتَيْنِ مَا أُرَاهُمَا إِلَّا خَبِيثَتَيْنِ، هَذَا الثُّومَ وَهَذَا الْبَصَلَ، وَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَرَى الرَّجُلَ يُوجَدُ رِيحُهُ، فَيُؤْخَذُ بِيَدِهِ، فَيُخْرَجُ بِهِ إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ، وَمَنْ كَانَ آكِلَهُمَا فَلْيُمِتْهُمَا طَبْخًا

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ addressed the people on Friday and then said: O people, you eat two plants that I consider nothing but foul: this garlic and this onion. I used to see a man whose breath was detected, so he would be taken by the hand and brought out to al-Baqi'. Whoever eats them must kill them by cooking.
