✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military expedition, and they were a small group. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called them and said: "How much of the Quran do you have with you?" So he assessed them until he came to a man among them who was one of the youngest of them in age. He said: "How much do you have with you, O so-and-so?" He said: "I have such-and-such, and Surah al-Baqarah." He said: "You have Surah al-Baqarah?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Go, for you are their leader." A man who was one of their nobles said: "By the One who is such-and-such, O Messenger of Allah, nothing prevented me from learning the Quran except fear that I would not be able to fulfill it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Learn the Quran, recite it, and sleep. For the likeness of the Quran for one who learns it, recites it, and acts upon it is like a leather bag filled with musk, whose fragrance spreads everywhere. And one who learns it and sleeps while it is in his heart is like a leather bag tied over musk."

  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationIsḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid: I do not know him. Someone other than ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar has narrated it and transmitted it as a mursal report, and the well-known version is mursal.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThere was disagreement about it on the authority of al-Maqburī. ʿUmar b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqamah, the nephew of Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqamah, narrated it from al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar contradicted him and narrated it from al-Maqburī, from ʿAṭāʾ, the freed slave of Abū Aḥmad, from Abū Hurayrah. And al-Layth b. Saʿd narrated it from al-Maqburī, from ʿAṭāʾ, the freed slave of Abū Aḥmad, as a mursal report, without mentioning Abū Hurayrah. The statement of al-Layth is closer to being correct. Al-Naysābūrī narrated to us: Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Ṣāghānī narrated to us, he said: I heard Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn say: The most reliable of people regarding Saʿīd is al-Layth b. Saʿd.
