✧ The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ on a very hot day. The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed with his companions, prolonging the standing until they began to fall down. Then he bowed and prolonged it, then stood and did the same. Then he began to move forward and step back. It was four bowings and four prostrations. Then he said, 'Everything you are promised was shown to me. Paradise was shown to me until I reached for a cluster from it, and if I had wished, I could have taken it. Then I reached for a cluster and my hand fell short of it. Then the Fire was shown to me, and I began to step back for fear that it would overwhelm you. I saw in it a tall black Himyarite woman being punished for a cat of hers that she had tied up; she neither fed it nor left it to eat from the vermin of the earth. And I saw Abu Thumamah ʿAmr b. Malik dragging his intestines in the Fire. And they used to say that the sun and the moon do not eclipse except for the death of a great person, but they are two signs among the signs of God that God shows you. So when they eclipse, pray until it clears.'
