✧ The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ while the people were with him. He stood for a long time, about the length of Surat al-Baqarah, then bowed for a long time, then raised [his head] and stood for a long time, but it was less than the first standing, then bowed for a long time, but it was less than the first bowing, then prostrated, then stood for a long time, but it was less than that first standing, then bowed for a long time, but it was less than that first bowing, then raised [his head] and stood for a long time, but it was less than that first standing, then bowed for a long time, but it was less than that bowing, then prostrated, then finished, and the sun had become clear. He said, 'The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of God; they do not eclipse for the death or life of anyone. When you see that, remember God.' They said, 'O Messenger of God, we saw you reach for something in this place of yours—al-Rabiʿ said: something—then we saw you as if you recoiled.' And the other two said, 'you recoiled.' He said, 'I saw Paradise,' and they said, 'and I reached for a cluster from it; had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains.' Al-Rabiʿ said, 'and I saw, or I was shown, the Fire,' and the other two said, 'and I saw the Fire,' and they said, 'I never saw a sight like today, and I saw that most of its people were women.' Al-Rabiʿ said: they said, 'Why?' And the other two said, 'Because of what, O Messenger of God?' He said, 'Because of their ingratitude.' It was said, 'Do they disbelieve in God?' He said, 'They are ungrateful to their husbands and deny kindness. If you were good to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees something from you, she says, "I have never seen any good from you."'
