✧ I never heard Yahya b. Sa'id nor 'Abd al-Rahman b. Mahdi narrate anything at all from Sufyan, from 'Ubaydah b. Mu'attib. And I heard Abu Qilabah relate from Hilal b. Yahya, who said: I heard Yusuf b. Khalid al-Samti say: I said to 'Ubaydah b. Mu'attib: 'This that you narrate from Ibrahim, did you hear all of it?' He said: 'Part of it I heard, and part of it I reason by analogy.' He said: I said: 'Then narrate to me what you heard, for I know analogy better than you.' And al-A'mash narrated something similar to this report, from al-Musayyib b. Rafi', from 'Ali b. al-Salt, from Abu Ayyub, from the Prophet ﷺ, except that it does not contain: 'he did not say the salutation between them.'
