✧ A man came to 'Umar while he was at 'Arafah and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I have come from Kufah and left there a man dictating copies of the Quran from memory." 'Umar became angry and swelled up until he almost filled the space between the two sides of the saddle. He said: "Who is he, woe to you?" He said: "'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud." 'Umar's anger gradually subsided and abated until he returned to his former state. Then he said: "Woe to you, I do not know of anyone more deserving of that than him. I will tell you about that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stay up at night talking with Abu Bakr about some matter of the Muslims' affairs, and one night he stayed up with him while I was with them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out walking, and we went out with him. Suddenly there was a man standing in the mosque praying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped to listen to his recitation. When we were about to recognize the man, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever would like to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd.'" He said: "Then the man sat down supplicating, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began saying: 'Ask, and you will be given' twice. 'Umar said: 'I said: By Allah, I will go to him in the morning and give him the good news.' So I went to him in the morning to give him the good news, but I found that Abu Bakr had already preceded me to him and given him the good news. By Allah, I never raced him to any good except that he beat me to it." This is the hadith of Abu Musa, except that he did not say "and swelled up." Salm b. Junadah said: "His anger gradually subsided," and he said: "standing at 'Arafah," and he did not say "used to," and he said: "listening to his recitation," and he said: "'Umar said: By Allah, I will go to him in the morning."
