✧ that he divorced his wife and came to Madinah to sell some property of his there, intending to use the proceeds for weapons and horses and to fight the Romans until he died. He met a group of his people who told him that a group of his people had wanted to do the same during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, but the Prophet ﷺ said, "Is there not for you in me a good example?" and forbade them from that. So he called witnesses to his taking back his wife, then he returned to us and informed that he met Ibn 'Abbas and asked him about the Witr. Ibn 'Abbas said: Shall I not tell you of the most knowledgeable person on earth about the Witr of the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: Yes. He said: 'A'ishah—go to her and ask her, then come back to me and tell me of her reply. He said: So I went to Hakim b. Aflah and asked him to accompany me to her. He said: I will not go near her, for I forbade her from saying anything about these two factions, but she refused to desist. I adjured him, so he came with me and entered upon her. She said: Is it Hakim? She recognized him. He said: Yes—or he said: Indeed. She said: Who is this with you? He said: Sa'd b. Hisham. She said: Who is Hisham? He said: Ibn 'Amir. She then asked for mercy upon him and said: What a good man 'Amir was. I said: O Mother of the Believers, inform me about the Witr of the Messenger of God ﷺ. She said: We used to prepare his toothstick and his water for purification, and God would rouse him at whatever part of the night He willed. He would use the toothstick, perform ablution, then pray eight rak'ahs, not sitting during them except at the eighth, where he would sit, remember God, and supplicate—Harun added in his narration at this point: then he would get up without saying the taslim, then pray the ninth rak'ah, then sit, praise his Lord, and invoke blessings upon his Prophet ﷺ, then say the taslim once so that we could hear him, then pray two rak'ahs while seated. Thus that is eleven rak'ahs, my son. Bundar and Harun both said: When he grew older and gained weight, he would perform Witr with seven and pray two rak'ahs while seated after saying the taslim; thus that is nine rak'ahs, my son.
