The idols among the people of Noah

Translation

✧ [ ʿUmyānis and its worship ] The Khawlān had an idol called ʿUmyānis in the land of Khawlān. They would apportion to it a share of their cattle and their crops, a share between it and God, as they claimed. Whatever of God's share—exalted is He—that they had designated for Him entered into the right of ʿUmyānis, they left it for it; and whatever of ʿUmyānis's share entered into the right of God—exalted is He—they returned it to it. They are a clan of Khawlān called al-Adīm. Concerning them, God—blessed and exalted is He—sent down, as they mention: "And they assign to God a portion of the crops and cattle He has created, and say, 'This is for God,' as they claim, 'and this is for our partners.' But what is for their partners does not reach God, while what is for God does reach their partners. Evil is what they judge."
