Translation
✧ [The name of Shammās and something about him] Ibn Hishām said: The name of Shammās was ʿUthmān. He was called Shammās only because a shammās (deacon) from among the deacons came to Makkah in the Jāhiliyyah, and he was handsome, so people marveled at his beauty. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, who was the maternal uncle of Shammās, said: 'I will bring you a shammās more handsome than him.' So he brought his sister's son, ʿUthmān b. ʿUthmān, and he was named Shammās. This is according to what Ibn Shihāb and others mentioned. Ibn Isḥāq said: Habbār b. Sufyān b. ʿAbd al-Asad b. Hilāl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm; and his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. Sufyān; and Hishām b. Abī Ḥudhayfah b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm; and Salamah b. Hishām b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm; and ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm.
