Sirat Ibn Hisham 308

The spread of mention of the Messenger among the tribes, especially among the Aws and Khazraj

Translation

✧ [The lineage of Abū Qays b. al-Aslat] Ibn Hishām said: Ibn Isḥāq ascribed this Abū Qays here to the Banū Wāqif, and he ascribed him in the account of the Elephant to Khaṭmah, because the Arabs may ascribe a man to the brother of his grandfather who is more famous than he. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to me that al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr al-Ghifārī was from the descendants of Nuʿaylah, the brother of Ghifār. He is Ghifār b. Mulayl, and Nuʿaylah b. Mulayl b. Ḍamrah b. Bakr b. ʿAbd Manāh, and they have said ʿUtbah b. Ghazwān al-Sulamī, and he is from the descendants of Māzin b. Manṣūr and Sulaym b. Manṣūr. Ibn Hishām said: So Abū Qays b. al-Aslat is from the Banū Wāʾil; and Wāʾil, Wāqif, and Khaṭmah are brothers from al-Aws.
