Sirat Ibn Hisham 3
Ibn Hisham's method in this book
Translation
✧ [Ibn Hishām's method in this book] Ibn Hishām said: I, if God wills, am commencing this book with the mention of Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm, and those descendants of his who fathered the Messenger of God ﷺ, and their children from their loins, the first then the next, from Ismāʿīl to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and whatever of their accounts occurs, while omitting mention of others among the descendants of Ismāʿīl in this manner for the sake of brevity, up to the account of the life of the Messenger of God ﷺ. I am also omitting some of what Ibn Isḥāq mentioned in this book: things in which there is no mention of the Messenger of God ﷺ, about which nothing of the Qurʾān was revealed, which are not a cause for anything in this book, nor an explanation of it, nor a witness to it, for the reason of brevity that I mentioned; and poems he cited that I did not find any of the scholars of poetry to recognize; and some matters of which part is disgraceful to report, part is distressing to some people to mention, and part al-Bakkāʾī did not confirm for us as his transmission. I will, if God Almighty wills, pursue all else of it to the full extent of its transmission and knowledge.
