The affair of al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿIlāṭ al-Sulamī
Translation
✧ [The Poetry of Ḥassān on the Day of Khaybar] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the poetry that was recited on the day of Khaybar was the saying of Ḥassān b. Thābit: Evil was what Khaybar fought for, for what they had gathered of sown fields and palm trees. They loathed death, so their sanctuary was violated, and they acknowledged the deed of the base, abased one. Is it from death that they flee? For death is the death of emaciation, not a comely one.
