✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have been stricken by hardship.” So he sent to his wives but found nothing with them. He said, “Is there not a man who will host him tonight?” A man from the Helpers stood up and said, “I will, O Messenger of Allah.” He went to his family and said to his wife, “A guest of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is here; do not withhold anything from him.” She said, “By Allah, I have nothing but the children’s food.” He said, “When the children want supper, put them to sleep, and come and extinguish the lamp, and we will tighten our bellies tonight.” She did so. Then the man went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the morning, and he ﷺ said, “Allah has indeed wondered—or laughed—at so-and-so and so-and-so.” Then Allah revealed: “And they prefer others over themselves, even though they are in privation.”
