✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and I fell ill with an illness that brought me near death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited me, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth and no one inherits from me except a daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth? He said: 'No.' I said: Then half of my wealth? He said: 'No.' I said: Then a third of it? He said: 'A third, and a third is much. Indeed, O Sa'd, to leave your heirs wealthy is better for you than to leave them poor, begging from people. You will never spend an expenditure seeking thereby the face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even a morsel you put in your wife's mouth.' I said: O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions? He said: 'You will never be left behind after me and perform a deed seeking thereby the face of Allah except that you will increase in degree and elevation by it. Perhaps you will be left behind after me, and Allah will benefit through you some people and harm others through you. O Allah, complete for my Companions their emigration and do not turn them back on their heels. But the unfortunate one is Sa'd b. Khawlah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ expressed grief for him, as he had died in Makkah.
