أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الشَّرْقِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ السُّلَمِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُمَيْلٍ سِمَاكٌ الْحَنَفِيُّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ لَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَلَا يُجَالِسُونَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثَ خِصَالٍ أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تُعْطِيَنِيهِنَّ قَالَ «وَمَا هِيَ؟ » قَالَ عِنْدِي أَجْمَلُ الْعَرَبِ وَأَحْسَنُهَا أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ أُزَوِّجُكَهَا قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ وَمُعَاوِيَةُ تَجْعَلُهُ كَاتِبًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ وَتُؤَمِّرُنِي حَتَّى أُقَاتِلَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ كَمَا كُنْتُ أُقَاتِلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»

✧ The Muslims would not look at Abu Sufyan or sit with him. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, three qualities I ask you to grant me.' He said, 'What are they?' He said, 'I have the most beautiful and finest of Arab women, Umm Habiba; I will marry her to you.' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'And Mu'awiya, make him a scribe before you.' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'And appoint me as a commander so that I may fight the polytheists as I used to fight the Muslims.' He said, 'Yes.'
