✧ We set out from our people, the Ghifar, and they used to consider the sacred month lawful for fighting. I, my brother Unays, and our mother went out and stayed with a maternal uncle of ours. Our uncle honored us and treated us well, but his people envied us and said: 'When you leave your family, Unays will go to them against you.' Our uncle came and mentioned what had been said to him. I said: 'As for the good you have done in the past, you have spoiled it, and we have no need for anything after this.' So we brought our camels, loaded them, and set off until we halted near Makkah. He said: 'O son of my brother, I had prayed before I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' I said: 'To whom?' He said: 'To Allah.' I said: 'In which direction did you face?' He said: 'I faced wherever my Lord directed me. I prayed in the evening until, near the end of the night, I would fall down, and the sun would rise over me.' Unays said: 'I have a need in Makkah.' So Unays went until he reached Makkah. Then he came back, and I said: 'What did you do?' He said: 'I met a man in Makkah who follows your religion, claiming that Allah has sent him.' I said: 'What do people say about him?' He said: 'They say: a poet, a soothsayer, a sorcerer.' Unays was one of the poets. He said: 'I have heard the words of the soothsayers, and his words are not like theirs. I compared his words with the various modes of poetry, and it does not fit on the tongue of anyone after me that it is poetry. By Allah, he is truthful, and they are liars.' I said: 'Then keep me covered until I go and see.' So I went to Makkah and sought hospitality from a man there. I said: 'Where is this man whom you call the Sabi'?' He pointed to me and said: 'The Sabi'.' Then the people of the valley rushed at me with every clod of earth and bone until I fell down unconscious. When I regained consciousness, I was like a red idol. I went to Zamzam, washed the blood off myself, and drank from its water. I stayed there between thirty nights and days with no food except Zamzam water, and I grew fat until the folds of my belly cracked, and I did not feel any weakness of hunger in my liver. While the people of Makkah were in a bright moonlit night, a deep sleep was cast over them, so no one was circumambulating the House except two women from among them who were calling upon Isaf and Na'ilah. They passed by me during their circumambulation, and I said: 'Marry one of them to the other.' They did not stop their invocation. Then they passed by me again, and I said: 'They are like the piece of wood.' They returned saying: 'If only someone were here.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr met them as they were descending and said: 'What is the matter with you two?' They said: 'The Sabi' is between the Kaaba and its curtains.' They said: 'What did he say to you?' They said: 'He said a word to us that fills the mouth.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came until he touched the Black Stone, then he circumambulated the House with his companion and prayed. Abu Dharr said: 'I was the first to greet him with the greeting of Islam.' He said: 'And upon you and the mercy of Allah.' Then he said: 'From which people are you?' I said: 'From Ghifar.' He lowered his hand and placed his fingers on his forehead. I said to myself: 'He dislikes that I attributed myself to Ghifar.' Then he raised his head and said: 'Since when have you been here?' He said: 'I have been here for thirty days and nights.' He said: 'Who has been feeding you?' I said: 'I have had no food except Zamzam water, and I grew fat until the folds of my belly cracked.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'It is blessed; it is food that nourishes.' Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, permit me to feed him tonight.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr went, and I went with them. Abu Bakr opened a door and began taking out for us some raisins of Taif. That was the first food I ate there. Then I stayed for some time. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: 'A land of palm trees has been shown to me, which I think is Yathrib. Can you convey a message from me to your people? Perhaps Allah will guide them through you and reward you among them.' So I set off and met Unays. He said: 'What did you do?' I said: 'I have embraced Islam and declared it true.' He said: 'I have no aversion to your religion, for I too have embraced Islam and declared it true.' Then we came to our mother, and she said: 'I have no aversion to your religion, for I too have embraced Islam and declared it true.' So we loaded up and went to our people, the Ghifar. Half of them embraced Islam, and Ima' ibn Rahada, who was their chief, led them in prayer. The other half said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrives in Madinah, we will embrace Islam.' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah, the remaining half embraced Islam. The Aslam tribe came and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, our brothers, we submit to what they have submitted to.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Ghifar—may Allah forgive her; Aslam—may Allah grant her peace.'"
