أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَبُو صَخْرَةَ بِبَغْدَادَ بَيْنَ الصُّورَيْنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَاسِمُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْجَرْمِيُّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ الثَّقَفِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ الْغَطَفَانِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ الْأَنْمَارِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ قَالَ
لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نَاجَيْتُمُ} الرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَةً قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِعَلِيٍّ «يَا عَلِيُّ مُرْهُمْ أَنْ يَتَصَدَّقُوا» قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بِكَمْ؟ قَالَ «بِدِينَارٍ» قَالَ لَا يُطِيقُونَهُ قَالَ «فَبِنِصْفِ دِينَارٍ» قَالَ لَا يُطِيقُونَهُ قَالَ «فَبِكَمْ»؟ قَالَ بِشَعِيرَةٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِعَلِيٍّ «إِنَّكَ لَزَهِيدٌ» قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ {أَأَشْفَقْتُمْ أَنْ تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَاتٍ فَإِذَا لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا وَتَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ} قَالَ فَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ يَقُولُ بِي خُفِّفَ عَنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ

✧ When this verse was revealed: {O you who believe, when you consult privately with the Messenger, then offer something in charity before your private consultation}, he said: The Prophet ﷺ said to 'Ali, "O 'Ali, command them to give charity." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, how much?" He said, "A dinar." He said, "They cannot bear it." He said, "Then half a dinar." He said, "They cannot bear it." He said, "Then how much?" He said, "A barley grain." He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ said to 'Ali, "You are indeed abstemious." He said: Then Allah revealed: {Are you afraid to offer charity before your private consultation? Since you did not do so, and Allah has turned to you in mercy, then establish prayer and give zakah.} He said: 'Ali used to say, "Through me the burden was lightened for this community."
