✧ When it was Monday, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew back the curtain of the room and saw Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ؓ leading the people in prayer. He said, "I looked at his face as if it were a page of a mushaf, and he was smiling. We almost became distracted in our prayer out of joy at seeing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Bakr ؓ wanted to step back when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him, 'Stay as you are.' Then he let the curtain down and passed away on that day. 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ stood up and said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not died, but he was sent for just as Musa was sent for, and he remained among his people for forty nights. By Allah, I hope that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will live until he cuts off the hands and tongues of men among the hypocrites who claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.'"

machine translationAl-Zuhrī said: Anas b. Mālik informed me that he heard the second sermon of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) when he sat on the pulpit of the Messenger of God ﷺ, on the day after the Messenger of God ﷺ died. He said: ʿUmar recited the testimony of faith while Abū Bakr was silent and did not speak. Then he said: "To proceed: Yesterday I said a statement, and it was not as I said. By God, I did not find the statement I made in a book that God revealed, nor in a covenant that the Messenger of God ﷺ made with me. But I had hoped that the Messenger of God ﷺ would live until he managed our affairs," meaning by that that he would be the last of them. "If Muḥammad ﷺ has died, then God has placed among you a light by which you are guided, so hold fast to it and you will be guided to that which God guided Muḥammad ﷺ. Then, Abū Bakr is the companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, the second of the two, and he is the most deserving of people to take charge of your affairs. So rise and pledge allegiance to him." A group of them had already pledged allegiance to him before that at the Saqīfah of Banū Sāʿidah, and the general pledge of allegiance took place at the pulpit.
