✧ While a man was narrating in Kindah, he said, 'A smoke will come on the Day of Resurrection and will seize the hearing and sight of the hypocrites, and it will seize the believer like a cold.' He said: We were alarmed, so I went to Ibn Mas'ud. He said: He was reclining, but he became angry, sat up, and said, 'O people, whoever knows something should speak from it, and whoever does not know should say, "Allah knows best." For it is part of knowledge that a man says, when he does not know, "I do not know." Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet ﷺ: "Say, I do not ask you for any reward for it, and I am not of the pretentious" (Qur'an 38:86). Quraysh—the Prophet ﷺ supplicated against them and said, "O Allah, help me against them with seven years like the years of Yusuf." Then a year of famine seized them until they perished, eating carrion and bones. A man would see something like smoke between the sky and the earth. Abu Sufyan b. Harb came to him and said, "O Muhammad, you came to command the maintaining of kinship ties, and your people have perished. So supplicate to Allah." Then he recited this verse: "So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke covering the people; this is a painful punishment" up to His saying: "Indeed, We will remove the punishment a little; indeed, you will return [to disbelief]" (Qur'an 44:10–15). He will remove the punishment from them when it comes, but then they will return to their disbelief. That is His saying: "The Day We will strike with the greatest assault" (Qur'an 44:16), that is the Day of Badr, and "Indeed, it will be a perpetual punishment" (Qur'an 44:16). And "Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, but they, after their defeat, will overcome" (Qur'an 30:1–3). The Romans have passed, and the four have passed.'
