✧ An army of the Muslims went out with me as their commander until we camped at Alexandria. A great man among their great ones said, 'Bring out to me a man who will speak with me and I will speak with him.' I said, 'No one will go out to him except me.' So I went out with my interpreter and he had his interpreter until a pulpit was placed for us. He said, 'What are you?' I said, 'We are the Arabs, the people of thorns and qaraẓ. We are the people of the House of Allah. We were the people with the most constricted land and the harshest life. We used to eat carrion and blood, and some of us would raid others with the harshest life people lived. Until there emerged among us a man, not the greatest of us that day in nobility nor the most of us in wealth. He said, "I am the Messenger of Allah to you," commanding us what we did not know and forbidding us what we and our fathers were upon. We denied him and rejected his words until people from other than us went out to him and said, "We believe you and have faith in you and follow you and fight those who fight you." He went out to them, and we went out to him. We fought him, and he killed us and prevailed over us and defeated us. He went on to take the Arabs who followed him and fought them until he prevailed over them. If those behind me among the Arabs knew the life you are in, none would remain except that he would come to you and share with you in the life you are in.' He laughed then said, 'Your messenger has spoken truth. Our messengers came to us with the like of what your messenger brought. We remained upon it until kings appeared among us and acted upon their whims and abandoned the affair of the prophets. If you take the affair of your prophet, no one will fight you except that you overcome him, and no one will oppose you except that you prevail over him. But if you do like what we did and abandon the affair of your prophet and act according to their whims, then He will leave us and you. You are not more in number than us nor stronger in power than us.' ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said, 'I have never spoken to a man more cunning than him.'"
