أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ هُوَ ابْنُ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ وَذَكَرَ ابْنُ سَلْمٍ آخَرَ مَعَهُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ شِمَاسَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ يَقُولُ

صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ وَكَانَ إِذَا صَلَّى لَنَا خَفَّفَ ثُمَّ لَا نَسْمَعُ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ يَقُولُ «رَبِّ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ» ثُمَّ رَأَيْتُهُ أَهْوَى بِيَدِهِ لِيَتَنَاوَلَ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ رَكَعَ ثُمَّ أَسْرَعَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَلَسَ وَجَلَسْنَا حَوْلَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «قَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ رَاعَكُمْ طُولُ صَلَاتِي وَقِيَامِي» قُلْنَا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَسَمِعْنَاكَ تَقُولُ «رَبِّ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ» فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ وُعِدْتُمُوهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَدْ عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا حَتَّى لَقَدْ عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ النَّارُ فَأَقْبَلَ إِلَيَّ مِنْهَا شَيْءٌ حَتَّى دَنَا بِمَكَانِي هَذَا فَخَشِيتُ أَنْ تَغْشَاكُمْ فَقُلْتُ رَبِّ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ فَصَرَفَهَا عَنْكُمْ فَأَدْبَرَتْ قِطَعًا كَأَنَّهَا الزَّرَابِيُّ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهَا نَظْرَةً فَرَأَيْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ حُرْثَانَ أَخَا بَنِي غِفَارٍ مُتَّكِئًا فِي جَهَنَّمَ عَلَى قَوْسِهِ وَإِذَا فِيهَا الْحِمْيَرِيَّةُ صَاحِبَةُ الْقِطَّةِ الَّتِي رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَا هِيَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلَا هِيَ أَرْسَلْتَهَا»

✧ One day we prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he prolonged the standing. Normally when he prayed with us he would keep it light. We did not hear anything from him except that he kept saying: “My Lord, and I am among them.” Then I saw him reach out with his hand as if to take hold of something, then he bowed. After that he hastened. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished with the salutation, he sat down and we sat around him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I knew that the length of my prayer and standing alarmed you.” We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, and we heard you saying: “My Lord, and I am among them.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “By the One in whose hand is my soul, there is nothing that you have been promised in the Hereafter except that it was presented to me in this place of mine, even Hell was presented to me. A part of it came towards me until it came close to this place of mine, and I feared that it would overwhelm you, so I said: My Lord, and I am among them; and He turned it away from you, and it retreated in pieces like carpets. I glanced at it and saw ʿAmr b. Ḥurthān, the brother of Banū Ghifār, leaning in Hell upon his bow, and in it was the Ḥimyarite woman, the owner of the cat that she had tied up: she neither fed it nor let it go.”
