✧ ʿAlqama went to Syria. He came to the mosque and prayed two rakʿas, then said: “O Allah, grant me a righteous companion.” He sat with Abu al-Dardaʾ, who said: “From which people are you?” He replied: “From the people of Kufa.” He said: “Is there not among you the keeper of the secret which no one else knew—Hudhayfa? Is there not among you the one whom Allah protected through the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ from Satan—ʿAmmar b. Yasir? Is there not among you the keeper of the black standard—ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿud?” Then he said: “How do you recite this verse: {By the night when it covers, and the day when it shines}?” I said: “And by the male and the female.” He said: “These people kept almost making me doubt, but I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
