✧ I came to Syria, and Abu al-Darda' was informed, so he came to us and said, 'Which of you can recite to me the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd?' He said: We said, 'All of us can recite.' He said, 'Which of you is the best reciter?' He said: My companions pointed to me. Abu al-Darda' said, 'Have you memorized?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'How did he recite {By the night when it covers}?' I said, 'By the night when it covers, and the day when it appears, and the male and the female.' He said, 'Did you memorize it from 'Abd Allah?' He said: I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'And I, by the One besides whom there is no god, heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this way, but these people want—by Allah, I will never follow them.'
