أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لِابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ هَلْ صَحِبَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَيْلَةَ الْجِنِّ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ؟ فَقَالَ مَا صَحِبَهُ مِنَّا أَحَدٌ وَلَكِنَّا فَقَدْنَاهُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ بِمَكَّةَ فَقُلْنَا اغْتِيلَ أَوِ اسْتُطِيرَ فَبِتْنَا بِشَرِّ لَيْلَةٍ بَاتَ بِهَا قَوْمٌ فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ السَّحَرِ أَوْ قَالَ فِي الصُّبْحِ إِذَا نَحْنُ بِهِ يَجِيءُ مِنْ قِبَلِ حِرَاءَ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَذَكَرْنَا لَهُ الَّذِي كَانُوا فِيهِ فَقَالَ ﷺ «إِنَّهُ أَتَانِي دَاعِيَ الْجِنِّ فَأَتَيْتُهُمْ فَقَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ» فَانْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَرَانَا آثَارَهُمْ وَآثَارَ نِيرَانِهِمْ

✧ I said to Ibn Mas'ud, 'Did any of you accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the jinn?' He said, 'None of us accompanied him, but we lost him one night in Makkah. We said, "He has been assassinated or snatched away." So we spent the worst night any people have ever spent. When it was the last part of the night, or he said, in the morning, there he was coming from the direction of Hira'. We said, "O Messenger of Allah," and mentioned to him what we had experienced. He ﷺ said, "A caller from the jinn came to me, so I went to them and recited to them." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires.'
