✧ We were with Salim b. Ubayd on a military expedition, and a man from the people sneezed and said, 'Peace be upon you.' Salim said, 'Peace be upon you and upon your mother.' The man felt offended. Salim said to him, 'It seems you felt offended?' He said, 'I would not like you to mention my mother with good or evil.' Salim said, 'We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and a man sneezed and said, "Peace be upon you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Upon you and upon your mother. When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Praise be to Allah in every situation,' or he said: 'Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds,' and let someone say to him: 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and let him say: 'May Allah forgive you.'"'

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationAmong the best of that is the hadith of Sālim b. ʿUbayd.

  • Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

machine translationThe error (wahm) in this narration of Jarīr is clear, for Hilāl b. Yisāf did not meet Sālim b. ʿUbayd and did not see him, and between them is an unknown man (majhūl).
