✧ What is disliked from speech and what is not disliked?

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ

«كَانَ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا يُهْلِكُنَا اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ هُوَ الَّذِي يُهْلِكُنَا وَيُمِيتُنَا وَيُحْيِينَا قَالَ اللَّهُ {مَا هِيَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا} الْآيَةَ»

Translation

Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad al-Azdī
  2. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm
  3. Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah

✧ The people of the pre-Islamic era used to say, ‘It is only the night and the day that destroy us; it is they that kill us and give us life.’ Allah said, {It is nothing but our life of this world} (the verse).
