✧ ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr said regarding a sale or a gift she had given, “By Allah, ʿĀʾishah will stop, or I will place her under interdiction.” When that reached her, ʿĀʾishah said, “I vow to Allah that I will never speak to Ibn al-Zubayr again.” When her desertion of him became prolonged, Ibn al-Zubayr sought intercession with her, but ʿĀʾishah said, “By Allah, I will not accept anyone’s intercession for him, and I will never break the vow I made.” When that became prolonged for Ibn al-Zubayr, he spoke to al-Miswar b. Makhramah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Aswad b. ʿAbd Yaghūth, both of Banū Zuhrah, and said to them, “I adjure you by Allah to bring me in to ʿĀʾishah, for it is not lawful for her to vow to cut me off.” So al-Miswar b. Makhramah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Aswad came with ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, wrapping him in their cloaks, until they sought permission to enter upon ʿĀʾishah. They said, “Peace be upon the Prophet ﷺ. May we enter, O Mother of the Believers?” ʿĀʾishah said, “Enter.” They said, “All of us?” She said, “Yes, enter, all of you,” not knowing that Ibn al-Zubayr was with them. When they entered, Ibn al-Zubayr plunged through the curtain and entered upon ʿĀʾishah, embracing her, and began adjuring her and weeping. Al-Miswar and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān began adjuring ʿĀʾishah, saying to her, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade what you have done, and it is not lawful for a Muslim to desert his brother for more than three [days].” When they repeated the reminder to ʿĀʾishah, she began reminding them and weeping, saying, “I made a vow, and the vow is serious.” They did not cease until she spoke to Ibn al-Zubayr. Then she freed forty slaves to expiate her vow. And after she freed forty slaves, she would weep until her tears wetted her veil.
