✧ The spoils and their distribution

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ الْمَاجِشُونِ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَ

بَيْنَا أَنَا وَاقِفٌ بَيْنَ الصَّفِّ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ نَظَرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي فَإِذَا أَنَا بَيْنَ غُلَامَيْنِ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَبَيْنَا أَنَا كَذَلِكَ إِذْ غَمَزَنِي أَحَدُهُمَا فَقَالَ أَيْ عَمِّ هَلْ تَعْرِفُ أَبَا جَهْلِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ وَمَا حَاجَتُكَ إِلَيْهِ يَا بْنَ أَخِي فَقَالَ أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّهُ يَسُبُّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ رَأَيْتُهُ لَا يُفَارِقُ سَوَادِي سَوَادَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ الْأَعْجَلُ مِنَّا قَالَ فَأَعْجَبَنِي قَوْلُهُ قَالَ فَغَمَزَنِي الْآخَرُ وَقَالَ مِثْلَهَا فَلَمْ أَنْشَبْ أَنْ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا جَهْلٍ يَجُولُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُمَا هَذَا صَاحِبُكُمَا الَّذِي تَسَلَانِي عَنْهُ فَابْتَدَرَاهُ فَضَرَبَاهُ بِسَيْفِهِمَا فَقَتَلَاهُ ثُمَّ أَتَيَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَاهُ بِمَا صَنَعَا فَقَالَ «أَيُّكُمَا قَتَلَهُ؟ » فَقَالَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا أَنَا قَتَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ «هَلْ مَسَحْتُمَا سَيْفَكُمَا؟ » قُلْنَا لَا قَالَ فَنَظَرَ فِي السَّيْفَيْنِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «كِلَاكُمَا قَتَلَهُ» ثُمَّ قَضَى بِسَلَبِهِ لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ قَالَ وَالرَّجُلَانِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ وَمُعَاذُ بْنُ عَفْرَاءَ

✧ While I was standing between the ranks on the day of Badr, I looked to my right and left, and I was between two youths of the Ansar. While I was so, one of them nudged me and said: “O uncle, do you know Abu Jahl b. Hisham?” I said: “Yes, and what is your need with him, O son of my brother?” He said: “I was told that he reviles the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if I see him, my body will not leave his until the quicker of us dies.” I was pleased with his words. Then the other nudged me and said the like. It was not long before I saw Abu Jahl moving among the people. I said to them: “This is your companion whom you asked me about.” They rushed at him and struck him with their swords and killed him. Then they came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what they had done. He said: «Which of you killed him?» Each of them said: “I killed him.” He said: «Did you wipe your swords?» We said: “No.” He looked at the two swords and the Prophet ﷺ said: «Both of you killed him.» Then he decreed his spoils to Mu‘adh b. ‘Amr b. al-Jamuh. The two men were Mu‘adh b. ‘Amr b. al-Jamuh and Mu‘adh b. ‘Afra’.
