✧ Fatima, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sent to Abu Bakr asking for her inheritance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from what Allah bestowed upon His Messenger. At that time, Fatima, ؓ, was seeking the charity of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that was in Madinah, Fadak, and what remained of the khums of Khaybar. A'isha said: Abu Bakr said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We are not inherited; what we leave is charity. The family of Muhammad only eats from this wealth; it is not for them to increase beyond the food." And by Allah, I will not change anything of the charities of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the condition it was in during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I will act in it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acted in it.' Abu Bakr refused to give Fatima anything from it. Fatima became angry with Abu Bakr over that and shunned him, and did not speak to him until she died. She lived six months after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When she died, Ali b. Abi Talib, ؓ, buried her at night and did not inform Abu Bakr. Ali prayed over her. Ali had a standing among the people during Fatima's life, but when Fatima, ؓ, died, the people's faces turned away from Ali until he noticed their change. Then Ali inclined toward reconciliation with Abu Bakr and pledging allegiance to him, although he had not pledged allegiance during those months. He sent to Abu Bakr, 'Come to us, and let no one come with you,' for Ali disliked that Umar should attend, knowing Umar's harshness toward them. Umar said to Abu Bakr, 'By Allah, you will not enter upon them alone.' Abu Bakr said, 'What could they do to me? By Allah, I will go to them.' Abu Bakr entered. Ali recited the shahada, then said, 'We have recognized, O Abu Bakr, your virtue and what Allah has given you. We do not begrudge you any good that Allah has brought to you. But you have taken sole control of the affair, and we considered that we had a right, and he mentioned their kinship to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and their right.' He continued speaking until Abu Bakr's eyes overflowed. When Abu Bakr spoke, he said, 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, the kinship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is dearer to me to maintain than my own kinship. As for what arose between me and you regarding these charities, I have not failed to do good in them, and I would not leave any matter in them that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do except that I would do it.' Ali said, 'Your appointment is this evening for the pledge of allegiance.' When Abu Bakr prayed the noon prayer, he ascended the pulpit, recited the shahada, mentioned Ali's situation and his delay in pledging, and his excuse for what he had excused himself. Then he sought forgiveness. Ali recited the shahada, magnified Abu Bakr's right, and stated that what he had done was not out of envy toward Abu Bakr or denial of the virtue with which Allah had favored him, but we considered that we had a share in the affair, and he had taken sole control over us, so we found that within ourselves. The Muslims were pleased with that and said to Ali, 'You have done right.' The Muslims were close to Ali when he returned to the matter with good conduct.
