✧ Delegations came to Mu'awiya in Ramadan, I being among them along with Abu Hurayra. Some of us would prepare food for others, and Abu Hurayra would often invite us to his camp. I said: If I prepare food and then invite them to my camp. So I ordered food and it was prepared. Then I met Abu Hurayra in the evening and said: O Abu Hurayra, tonight the invitation is with me. He said: You have preceded me. He (the narrator) said: So I invited them to my camp, when Abu Hurayra said: Shall I not mount you (i.e., give you a ride) or talk to you? I will narrate to you a hadith from your own hadiths, O assembly of the Ansar, until the food is ready. Then he mentioned the conquest of Makkah and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached and entered Makkah. He sent al-Zubayr to one of the two flanks and sent Khalid b. al-Walid to the left flank, and sent Abu Ubayda to the unarmored ones. They took the valley while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in his battalion. Quraysh had sent their rabble and their followers, and they said: We will put these forward; if they gain something, we will be with them, and if they are struck, we will give what they ask. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked and saw me, and said: 'O Abu Hurayra, call out to the Ansar; let no one come to me except an Ansari.' So he called out to them, and they came and surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do you not see the rabble of Quraysh and their followers?' He struck with his right hand, the one next to the little finger, on the middle of his left hand, and said: 'Reap them like harvest until you meet me at al-Safa.' Abu Hurayra said: We set out, and none of us wished to kill any of them whom he wished except that he killed him, and none of them directed anything at us. Abu Sufyan said: O Messenger of Allah, the green (youth) of Quraysh has been made lawful; there is no Quraysh after today. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe.' So they closed their doors. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came until he touched the Stone and circumambulated the House, and in his hand was a bow; he was holding the bow. Beside the House there was an idol which they used to worship. The Prophet ﷺ began to stab it in its side with the bow and said: 'Truth has come and falsehood has vanished.' When he finished his circumambulation, he came to al-Safa and ascended to where he could see the House. He ﷺ began raising his hand and began praising Allah and mentioning what he wished to mention, while the Ansar were below him. Some of them said to others: As for the man, desire for his town and compassion for his clan have overtaken him. Then revelation descended upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Hurayra said: It was not hidden from us when revelation descended; none of us would look at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but rather he would lower his head until the revelation ended. When the revelation was finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O assembly of the Ansar, you said: As for the man, desire for his town and compassion for his clan have overtaken him.' They said: We said that, O Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'No, indeed I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I migrated to Allah and to you. My life is your life and my death is your death.' So they came forward weeping and said: By Allah, we did not say what we said except out of reluctance to part with Allah and His Messenger. He said: 'Indeed Allah and His Messenger believe you and excuse you.'
