✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted the people during the days of Badr. Abu Bakr spoke and diverted from him. Then Umar spoke and diverted from him. Sa'd b. Ubadah said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you mean us? If you commanded us to plunge into the sea, we would plunge, or to strike its flanks to Birk al-Ghimad, we would do it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned his companions and set off to Badr. They came upon water skins belonging to Quraysh, among which was a black slave of Banu al-Hajjaj. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ seized him and began asking him, "Where is Abu Sufyan? Where did you leave him?" He would say, "By Allah, I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan. This is Quraysh: Abu Jahl b. Hisham, Utbah b. Rabi'ah, Shaybah b. Rabi'ah, and Umayyah b. Khalaf." When he said that, they beat him. He said, "Leave me, leave me, I will tell you." When they left him, he said, "By Allah, I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but this is Quraysh approaching. Among them are Abu Jahl, Utbah and Shaybah sons of Rabi'ah, and Umayyah b. Khalaf. They have come." The Prophet ﷺ was praying, then finished and said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, you strike him when he tells you the truth and leave him when he lies to you. This is Quraysh approaching to protect Abu Sufyan." He ﷺ pointed with his hand to the ground and said, "This is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, and this is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow." Anas said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, not one of them moved from his place of death."
