✧ I was writing for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “Write: ‘Not equal are those who remain behind among the believers and those who strive in the way of Allah.’” He said: Then Abdullah b. Umm Maktum came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I love jihad in the way of Allah, but I have the disability you see; my sight has gone.” Zayd b. Thabit said: The thigh of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew heavy on my thigh until I feared it would crush it. When he was relieved, he said, “Write: ‘Not equal are those who remain behind among the believers, other than those with disabilities, and those who strive in the way of Allah.’”

machine translationMy father said: Ibn al-Mubārak narrated it from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Qabīṣah b. Dhuʾayb, from Zayd b. Thābit, from the Prophet ﷺ. My father was asked: Which of the two is more likely? He said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Isḥāq corroborated Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān on this narration, and some of the Syrians corroborated Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī, and Maʿmar was the one who kept closer company with al-Zuhrī.
