✧ While we were traveling in the land of the Byzantines in a detachment commanded by Malik b. Abd Allah al-Khath‘ami, Malik passed by Jabir b. Abd Allah as he was walking, leading a mule of his. Malik said to him, ‘O Abu Abd Allah, ride, for Allah has given you a mount.’ Jabir said, ‘I am tending my mount and sparing my people, and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever’s feet become dusty in the cause of Allah, Allah has forbidden him to the Fire.”’ Malik admired his words, and he went on until he reached a place where his voice could be heard, then called out to him at the top of his voice, ‘O Abu Abd Allah, ride, for Allah has given you a mount.’ Jabir understood what he intended by raising his voice, and said, ‘I am tending my mount and sparing my people, and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever’s feet become dusty in the cause of Allah, Allah has forbidden him to the Fire.”’ Then the people jumped down from their mounts, and we did not see a day with more people walking than that day.
