✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah: “O Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, may Allah protect us from the rule of the foolish.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the rule of the foolish?” He said, “Rulers who will be after me who do not follow my guidance and do not practice my Sunnah. Whoever believes them in their lies and helps them in their wrongdoing, those are not from me and I am not from them, and they will not come to my basin. Whoever does not believe them in their lies and does not help them in their wrongdoing, they are from me and I am from them, and they will come to my basin. O Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin, and prayer is a proof”—or he said, “a means of nearness.”—“O Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, people set out in the morning: one sells his soul and sets it free, and another sells his soul and destroys it.”
