✧ That Ma'iz ibn Malik came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "I have committed a major sin." The Prophet ﷺ turned him away several times. Then he asked his people: "Is there any defect in him?" It was said: "There is no defect in him, except that he did something which he thinks will not be removed from him except by having the punishment carried out on him." He said: "So he ordered us, and we took him to Baqi' al-Gharqad. We did not dig a hole for him nor tie him up. We threw at him pieces of baked clay, bones, and stones. He complained and ran, so we ran after him. He came to the lava field and stood against us, and we threw its boulders at him until he became still. Then the Prophet ﷺ stood in the evening as a preacher, praised and extolled Allah, then said: 'Now then, what is the matter with people that when we go on a military expedition, one of them stays behind with our families, bleating like a he-goat? Indeed, it is incumbent upon me that no one is brought to me who did that except that I will make an example of him.'" He said: "And he did not revile him nor ask forgiveness for him."
