✧ I and Masruq often used to come to al-Subayy b. Ma'bad to ask him about this hadith. He said: I was a Christian man, and I embraced Islam. I pronounced the talbiyah for Hajj and Umrah. Salman b. Rabi'ah and Zayd b. Suhan heard me pronouncing the talbiyah for both of them at al-Qadisiyyah, and they said, "This man is more astray than his family's camel." It was as if a mountain had been placed upon me by their words, until I reached Makkah. I came to Umar b. al-Khattab while he was at Mina and mentioned that to him. He turned to them and reprimanded them, then he turned to me and said, "You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ," twice.

machine translationAbū Wā'il Shaqīq b. Salamah narrated it from al-Ṣubayy b. Maʿbad. It was narrated from Abū Wā'il by Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir, Sulaymān al-Aʿmash, al-Ḥakam b. ʿUtaybah, Ḥammād b. Abī Sulaymān, Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit, ʿAmr b. Murrah, Mughīrah, Salamah b. Kuhayl, Ḥabīb b. Ḥassān, Sayyār, Thuwayr b. Abī Fākhitah, Yazīd b. Abī Ziyād, ʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd, and Mujāhid b. Jabr Abū al-Ḥajjāj. There is disagreement about him (Mujāhid). Ibn Jurayj narrated it from al-Ḥasan b. Muslim, from Mujāhid, from Abū Wā'il Shaqīq b. Salamah, and he said at the end something good that no one else mentioned: Abū Wā'il said, 'Masrūq b. al-Ajdaʿ and I used to go back and forth to al-Ṣubayy b. Maʿbad, having him recall this hadith for us.' ʿUmar b. Dharr and Abān b. Ṣāliḥ narrated it from Mujāhid, from al-Ṣubayy b. Maʿbad, without mentioning Abū Wā'il between them. ʿAbdah b. Abī Lubābah narrated it from Abū Wā'il, and there is disagreement about him. Ibn ʿUyaynah said: from ʿAbdah, from Abū Wā'il; and likewise said Abū al-Mughīrah, Muḥammad b. Muṣʿab and Bishr b. Bakr, from al-Awzāʿī, from ʿAbdah, from Abū Wā'il. But al-Walīd b. Mazyad said: from al-Awzāʿī, from ʿAbdah, from Masrūq, from al-Ṣubayy. And Burd b. Sinān said: from ʿAbdah, from Zirr b. Ḥubaysh, from al-Ṣubayy. Ḥabīb b. Ḥassān narrated it from Abū Wā'il. ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī, Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, al-Ḥasan al-ʿUranī and Abū Qilābah narrated it from al-Ṣubayy b. Maʿbad, from ʿUmar. It is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith, and the best of its chains is the hadith of Manṣūr and al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wā'il, from al-Ṣubayy, from ʿUmar.
