أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دَاوُدَ عَنْ فِطْرِ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ وَاثِلَةَ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ إِنَّ قَوْمَكَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَمَلَ وَأَنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ فَقَالَ كَذَبُوا وَصَدَقُوا «إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَمَّا دَخَلَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ عَلَى قُعَيْقِعَانَ فَتَحَدَّثُوا أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ وَأَصْحَابَهُ هَزْلَى فَرَمَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ فَرَمَلُوا وَلَيْسَتْ بِسُنَّةٍ»

Translation

✧ I said to Ibn ‘Abbas: “Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did ramal and that it is a Sunnah.” He said: “They have lied and they have spoken truth. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah, the polytheists were on Qu‘ayqi‘an, and they said that Muhammad ﷺ and his companions were weakened. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did ramal and commanded his companions, and they did ramal, but it is not a Sunnah.”
