✧ I asked ‘A’ishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and said to her: “Have you considered the saying of Allah: ‘Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwa are among the rites of Allah’ until the end of the verse? By Allah, there is no blame upon anyone not to go between al-Safa and al-Marwa.” ‘A’ishah said: “How bad is what you have said, O son of my sister! If this verse were as you have interpreted it, it would have been: ‘there is no blame upon him not to go between them.’ But it was revealed concerning the Ansar before they embraced Islam. They used to declare the talbiyah for Manat, the false deity whom they used to worship at al-Mushallal, and whoever declared the talbiyah for her used to consider it sinful to go between al-Safa and al-Marwa. When they embraced Islam, they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we used to consider it sinful to go between al-Safa and al-Marwa.’ Then Allah revealed: ‘Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwa are among the rites of Allah; so whoever performs Hajj of the House or ‘Umrah, there is no blame upon him to go between them.’” ‘A’ishah said: “Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established the Sunnah of going between them, so it is not for anyone to abandon going between them.”
