أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَلَّادٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَوْفٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ عُتَيٍّ قَالَ

رَأَيْتُ أُبَيًّا رَأَى رَجُلًا تَعَزَّى بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَأَعَضَّهُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَدْ أَرَى فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَوْ فِي نَفْسِكَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُهَا أَنْ لَا أَقُولَهَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ تَعَزَّى بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَأَعِضُّوهُ وَلَا تَكْنُوا»

✧ Ubayy saw a man consoling himself with the consolation of Jahiliyyah, so he cursed him with an explicit obscenity—though he did not (actually) do so—then said, 'I can see in yourselves, or in yourself, that I could not help but say it when I heard it. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever consoles himself with the consolation of Jahiliyyah, curse him with an explicit obscenity and do not use a euphemism.'
