✧ 'Umar b. al-Khattab went out to Syria until when he was at Sargh, the commanders of the armies met him: Abu 'Ubayda b. al-Jarrah and his companions. They informed him that the plague had occurred in Syria. Ibn 'Abbas said: 'Umar said, "Call for me the earliest Muhajirun." So I called them, and he consulted them and informed them that the plague had occurred in Syria. They differed. Some of them said, "You have set out for a matter, so we do not think you should turn back from it." Others said, "With you are the rest of the people and the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we do not think you should bring them forward to this plague." He said, "Leave me." Then he said, "Call for me the Ansar." So I called them, and he consulted them. They followed the path of the Muhajirun and differed just as they had differed. He said, "Leave me." Then he said, "Call for me whoever is here from the elders of Quraysh who were among the Muhajirun of the conquest." So I called them, and no two of them differed. They said, "We think you should return with the people and not bring them forward to this plague." 'Umar called out among the people, "I am departing in the morning, so depart in the morning." Abu 'Ubayda b. al-Jarrah said, "Fleeing from the decree of Allah?" 'Umar said, "If only someone else had said it, O Abu 'Ubayda!" 'Umar disliked opposing him. "We flee from the decree of Allah to the decree of Allah. Do you think if you had camels and they descended into a valley that had two sides, one fertile and the other barren: if you grazed them in the fertile side, you would graze them by the decree of Allah; and if you grazed them in the barren side, you would graze them by the decree of Allah?" He said, "Yes."
