أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبْجَرَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ وَاصِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ

خَطَبَنَا عَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ فَأَوْجَزَ وَأَبْلَغَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ قُلْنَا يَا أَبَا الْيَقْظَانِ لَقَدْ أَبَلَغْتَ وَأَوْجَزْتَ فَلَوْ كُنْتَ تَنَفَّسْتَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ طُولَ صَلَاةِ الرَّجُلِ وَقِصَرَ خُطْبَتِهِ مَئِنَّةٌ مِنْ فِقْهِ الرَّجُلِ فَأَطِيلُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاقْصُرُوا الْخُطْبَةَ وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا»

Translation

✧ ʿAmmār b. Yāsir addressed us and was brief yet eloquent. When he descended, we said, "O Abu al-Yaqẓān, you have been eloquent and brief; if only you had paused for breath." He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'A man's lengthy prayer and short sermon are a sign of his understanding; so lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon, for some eloquence is sorcery.'"
